API & Integration Basics FAQs

APIs are the backbone of digital connectivity. These FAQs explain how APIs work,
the types of integrations they enable, and why they’re essential to automation.

An API (Application Programming Interface) allows two applications to communicate by exchanging data through defined endpoints. It acts as a bridge, letting one system request information or actions from another without needing to know how that system works internally.

REST APIs use standard HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE) and are lightweight and flexible, while SOAP APIs rely on XML messaging and strict protocols for higher security and consistency. REST is ideal for web and mobile applications, while SOAP is common in enterprise or legacy systems.

APIs make it possible for separate software tools to share data and functions automatically. Instead of manually transferring information between systems, APIs connect them so workflows happen instantly — like syncing CRM data with accounting software or sending leads from forms to marketing platforms.

API authentication verifies that the request to access data or perform an action is coming from an authorized source. Common methods include API keys, OAuth 2.0, and tokens. Authentication ensures data security and prevents unauthorized access between connected applications.

Examples include connecting Slack with Google Calendar, syncing Shopify orders with QuickBooks, or linking HubSpot CRM with Salesforce. These integrations automate everyday business tasks and eliminate the need for manual data entry or duplicate work.

API integration increases efficiency, reduces human error, and keeps data consistent across all systems. It also enables scalability — businesses can add or replace tools easily without rebuilding their entire tech stack.
